Music Review: Disney's New THE LITTLE MERMAID Soundtrack Makes Less Out Of More… More Or Less
CD/Books/DVDs: May 25, 2023
Truthfully, there is a lot to enjoy if you are unfamiliar with Disney’s THE LITTLE MERMAID, and even if you are, but taking all this on balance ... this new soundtrack comes off a bit thin
Review: IN A DIFFERENT REALITY SHE'S CLAWING AT THE WALLS at Shaking The Tree
Portland: May 25, 2023
This wild play by Max Yu explores how technology isolates and then consumes us as it goes from being a tool we use to something we’re used by.

Review: FJK DANCE: Raising the Arab Voice in Contemporary Dance at New York Live Arts

What did our critic think of FJK DANCE: RAISING THE ARAB VOICE IN CONTEMPORARY DANCE at New York Live Arts? For their ninth season, FJK Dance presents three company signature works by Artistic Director Fadi J. Khoury, each rich with contemporary and visual arts, reflective narratives, and an overarching motif of peace building.
Review: THE CRUCIBLE at Eisenhower Theater
Washington, DC: May 25, 2023
What did our critic think of THE CRUCIBLE at Eisenhower Theater? Choreographer Helen Pickett does in her ballet The Crucible just exactly what Arthur Miller attempted in his 1953 play, her source. Both try to make a new language to express the Salem witch trials of 1692 because those events were too extraordinary for regular English or garden-variety ballet.

Review: Pieter-Dirk Uys proves once again that he is the master of satire and characterisation in SELL-BY-DATE
South Africa: May 25, 2023
Pieter-Dirk Uys knows just how to tap into our fears and our challenges, and make us laugh at them. SELL-By-DATE does exactly that.
Review: THE SOUND INSIDE at Coal Mine Theatre
Toronto: May 25, 2023
Rapp’s play, about a Yale creative writing professor facing down a terrible illness, and her relationship with a challenging student of whom she asks an impossible favour, has lived in my mind since I saw it. It’s a familiar story that goes in new directions; it’s mesmerizingly told, and acted with chemistry and grace by its cast of two.

Broadway Beyond Louisville Review: INTO THE WOODS at Tennessee Performing Arts Center
Louisville: May 25, 2023
What did our critic think of INTO THE WOODS at Tennessee Performing Arts Center? The star-studded cast is led by Tony Award winner Stephanie J. Block and Sebastian Arcelus as The Baker’s Wife and the Baker respectively. They’re a real-life couple, so their chemistry is justly wonderful, but I cannot express how amazing their individual performances are as well.

Review: TWENTY QUESTIONS, 20 Years Later
Philippines: May 25, 2023
If you were to stage a 20-year-old two-hander post-pandemic, it’d be a smart move to update its directorial decisions and the script’s words and dialogues, especially with the play’s themes about young love, pre-marital sex, and peer pressure meant to resonate, at the least, with the Gen Zers today.

Nashville: May 24, 2023
Truth be told, this may be the most impressive assemblage of talent we’ve ever encountered on the Jackson Hall stage in our 30-some years of reviewing Broadway at TPAC. Seriously.

Review: FALSETTOS at Front Porch Theatricals Pairs a Warm Heart with a Cold Shoulder
Pittsburgh: May 24, 2023
William Finn's neurotic queer musical epic isn't necessarily user-friendly, but Pittsburgh's best local playhouse still manages to find the warmth amidst the dysfunction. |
