KATE ROLLING (Female, late 20s-early 30s). Any ethnicity. Businesswoman and owner of Rolling & Co Milliners & Costumiers. She is whip-smart, charming, ambitious, and focused on building and maintaining the business she created. She is expected by most to marry soon, but she values her freedom and is wary of any situation, especially marriage, that may threaten the freedom she has fought for and achieved. She has put aside any idea of romantic love and thrives as a successful businesswoman. If she does marry, the terms of her marriage contract would be satisfactory to her business ambitions. She values tact, self-control, and practicality above all else.
MISS BLAGG (Female, mid 30s- mid 40s). Any ethnicity. The dressmaker in Kate and Maisie’s shop. She is bright, talented, and outspoken. She is past her youth, and her prospects of marriage have dwindled. She now believes a woman should marry for love and not just for financial security.
MISS GLADYS TRACEY (Female, late teens to early 20s). Any ethnicity. Kate’s youthful shop assistant. Unlike Kate, she is bursting with the possibility of life and love and has several young suitors. She is ruled by her emotions and struggles with Kate's insistence on business first, last, and always. She is young and vibrant.
GEORGE PILLATT (Male, mid-30s- early 40s). Any ethnicity. Of Pillatts Ladies’ Tailor. He is focused, driven, and highly rational. Everything is a business arrangement for him, and he calculates the profits and loss margins in all aspects of his life. He offers Kate a fair and mutually beneficial partnership in business and marriage, but romantic love is not a part of the equation.
LAWRENCE FAWCETT (Male, early-mid 30s). Any ethnicity. He has given up his father's successful business to do something in his life that brings him happiness, beauty, adventure, and meaning. He can no longer be a part of a business that values pretense and artifice. He's on a quest for authentic experiences and meaningful connections with others. He knows there are things more important than making money and hopes Kate will see she doesn't have to give up herself to have both her dreams and true love. He hopes to have a true partnership in all ways.
JACK WEBBER (Male, late teens to early 20s). Any ethnicity. Works at Pillatt’s. He is a passionate and sweet young man deeply in love with Gladys Tracey. He is tortured with jealousy and desperate for Tracey to return his affections.
MAISIE GLOW (Female, late 20s-early 30s). Any ethnicity. Of Rolling & Co, Milliners & Costumiers. She uses her looks, charms, and smarts to her advantage. She dresses elaborately in the latest fashions and speaks with a playful, affected drawl. She values herself but also understands the importance of making a good choice in marriage to secure a comfortable future.
GOODRICH (Male, mid-late 30s). Any ethnicity. A commercial traveler. He is aggressively amiable and perpetually smiling. He is ambitious, confident, and used to getting his way by sheer unrelenting persistence. He doesn't take no for an answer and will wait you out if necessary.
ELLIMAN (Male, late 20s-early 30s). Any ethnicity. A worldly young suitor of Maisie. He is enthralled with Maisie and is doing his best to begin a romantic relationship with her, with or without marriage. Preferably without.
LADY SMITH-CARR-SMITH (Female, late 20s-mid 30s). Any ethnicity. A client of Kate’s. A young wealthy society woman who values fashion, prestige, and influence above all else. Spoiled, privileged, and knows the value of having her on your side. She has the best of the best; if she doesn’t, she will get it. She has the power to improve Kate's business with one word to her society friends.
POLLY (Female, late teens to early 20s). Any ethnicity. A hard-working young woman of the working class who assists the women of Rolling & Co., Milliners & Costumiers.
