West Bay Community Theater will hold auditions for its August, 2023 production of CABARET - In Concert on Friday, June 2 (6:30 – 9:30pm) and Saturday, June 3 (1:00-4:00pm).

Callbacks, if needed, will take place Friday, June 9th.

Appointments are preferred. Please book an audition time by emailing
info@wbctheater.org or calling (401) 372-7201. Those without appointments will be auditioned on a first-come, first-served basis. Audition forms can be downloaded from:

To audition, please prepare 32 bars of a song from the show or in the style of the show. Please provide sheet music if the song is not from the show -- accompanist provided.

Auditioning for all principal voices and ensemble. Anyone 16 and older welcome (show contains some mature content). This production is music-focused, with minimal staging in addition to multimedia support.

Production date: Saturday, August 12th, 2023 in Wickford, RI (NK Town Beach Bandshell)

Rehearsals start in mid to late June.

WBCT’s production will focus on the music of the piece with minimal staging, aided by multimedia support. This version is the 1998 adaptation, licensed through Tams-Witmark/Concord Theatrical and appears on their list of upcoming productions of CABARET across the nation.

In a Berlin nightclub, as the 1920's draw to a close, a garish Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and assures them they will forget all their troubles at the Cabaret. With the Emcee's bawdy songs as wry commentary, Cabaret explores the dark, heady, and tumultuous life of Berlin's natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. Cliff, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, is immediately taken with English singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally's boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish. Musical numbers include “Willkommen,” “Cabaret,” “Maybe This Time,” “Don't Tell Mama,” “The Money Song,” and Two Ladies.

Characters:

Master of Ceremonies (Emcee) - Vocal Range – Tenor – Low C3 to High C#5

The host at the Kit Kat Klub – presented as a gender-questionable character comfortable with being close

to both men and women – comedic – loveable, but embraces the dark tendencies of humankind.

Ability to speak with a German, French, and American Accent is a bonus.

Sally Bowles – Vocal Range – Mezzo/Alto – Must be able to sing B4 in chest voice – Low E3 to High C5.

A British Cabaret singer at the Kit Kat Klub. A quirky character that comes across as flighty, yet at times struggles with knowing the darkness of the reality of her life as a cabaret performer. She has been a cabaret performer for many years and is always looking for her next meal, gig, or patron to support her. Speaks with a British Accent.

Clifford Bradshaw – Vocal Range – Low A2 to High E4 – Baritone

An American novelist and English teacher traveling to Berlin. A man coming into his own, by exploring his sexuality and existing gender norms. He represents the morality and innocence that is lost during the rise of the Third Reich. He comes to learn that his actions, or inactions, can have grave consequences. Speaks with an American accent. Sexually ambiguous.

Ernst Ludwig – Sings in the Chorus – Vocal range flexible.

A friendly and Likeable German. Totally unassuming. Takes English lessons from Cliff and smuggles funds for the Nazi Party. The audience has no clue to his fanatical and hate filled underbelly, until he is revealed with the Swastika on his arm.

Fräulein Schneider – Vocal Range – Alto – Low D3 to Ab4

A landlady who rents rooms in her large boarding flat. Fraulein Schneider is a jaded realist who is shocked to discover love later on in her life. She must grapple with what her heart says about the man she loves, who is Jewish, vs. her survival instincts being surrounded by the growing power of the Nazi Party.

Fräulein Kost – Vocal Range – Alto/Mezzo – Low Ab3 to F5

Another of Fraulein Schneider’s roomers. She earns money by providing ‘services’ to ever changing groups of sailors. She is a survivor, with a hidden fanatical side. Commanding and comfortable in her skin.

Herr Schultz – Vocal Range – High Baritone – Low G2 to High F4

One of Fraulein Schneider’s roomers and the proprietor of a Fruit Shop. Herr Schultz is a man who never lost his optimism for life. He wants to be able to spend the rest of his days with his love, Schneider. He stands against the rising power of anti-Semitism, believing that good will ultimately prevail against bigotry and hatred. Ability to speak with a slight Yiddish accent a plus.

The Kit Kat Girls / The Kit Kat Boys - Vocal Range – Strong Singers in all voice parts

These individuals are part of various scenes as performers, citizens, and as club patrons. All types.

About West Bay Community Theater:

West Bay Community Theater is a North Kingstown-based 501 (c) (3) arts organization founded in 2018 by former members of Academy Players and North Kingstown Players in order to re-establish a community theater in the West Bay region of Rhode Island. In 2022 WBCT successfully presented The Great American Trailer Park Musical, Hair -In Concert and their Halloween-themed musical revue, The Villains Return. Their production of Noel Coward’s Private Lives opens June 29th. A future home base is in the works in the heart of Wickford Village at the site of the Old Library on 55 Brown Street.
